Discount codes
Make codes your clients and students type in when they book or buy, choose what each code works on, and limit how often it can be used.
A discount code takes a percentage or an amount off. Clients type it on your booking page, and students type it when they buy a course, a download, a seat in a class or a session. Codes are on the dashboard under Discount Codes.
Making a code
Click New Code, then choose:
- Code: what people type, for example SUMMER20. Capital letters or not, it works the same.
- Type and value: a percentage, or an amount in dollars.
- Can be used on: where the code works.
- Everything: anything you sell.
- Bookings: appointments on your booking page.
- Everything you teach: courses, downloads, classes and sessions.
- Courses only, Downloads only, Classes only or Sessions only.
- Choose items...: only the courses, downloads, classes or sessions you tick.
- Start date and expiration: when the code works. Leave them empty for no dates.
- Usage limit: how many times the code can be used in total. Leave it empty for no limit.
- Uses per customer: how many times one person can use it, counted by their email address. Leave it empty for no limit.
You only see the choices that fit your account: an account that only teaches doesn't see Bookings, and one that only takes bookings doesn't see the teaching choices.
What buyers see
On a course, download, class or session, the buyer clicks Have a discount code?, types the code and clicks Apply. The page then shows the price with the code, for example "SUMMER20 applied. You pay $134.10.", and that's what they pay. If the code doesn't work there, they see why.
How the price is worked out
- A code works out from the regular price.
- If the item is on sale, the buyer pays whichever is lower: the sale price, or the regular price with the code. Never both. A code that wouldn't beat the sale price says so, and isn't used up.
- A code can't bring a price under $0.50, the smallest amount a card can be charged. To give something away for free, use Grant access on a course instead.
- Sessions you've set to be paid outside Mila don't take codes, because nothing is paid through Mila.
When a use counts
A use is counted when the buyer goes on to pay. If they leave the payment page without paying, the use is given back once the page expires (within a few hours), so an abandoned purchase doesn't use up a code. If the same buyer comes back and tries again with the code before then, their unfinished payment page is closed so they can use the code now. A payment that went through is never touched. The Usage column counts uses paid for and payments still open.
Turning a code off, or deleting it
Turn a code off with the switch, and it stops working straight away. A code that has been used can't be deleted, because its uses are part of your records: turn it off instead. A code that was never used can be deleted.
Loyalty rewards are codes too, and they work on bookings only. See Tips, discounts, and comps for how those work on bookings.
