When you are choosing a booking app, the monthly price is only half the story. What you pay on every card payment adds up too, especially once deposits and cards on file are in the mix.

Here is what Vagaro, GlossGenius and Square Appointments publish for a solo artist, what each charges to process a card, and where Mila fits. Every figure links to the provider’s own page.

Vagaro pricing

Plans

  • One location, Just Me: $23.99 per month for the first 6 months
  • One location, Just Me: $30.00 per month after that

Card processing

  • In person (swipe, dip or tap): 2.6% + $0.10
  • Keyed in, card on file or online: 3.5% + $0.19
  • Rates shown are Vagaro’s Small Merchant rates, for under $4,000 a month in card payments.
  • Each extra bookable calendar at a location is $10 a month, up to seven.
  • Vagaro also lists network fees on its rates page, including a $1.25 monthly Mastercard location fee.

GlossGenius pricing

Plans

  • Standard: $28 per month, or $24 a month billed annually
  • Gold: $56 per month, or $48 a month billed annually

Card processing

  • Every card payment: 2.6% flat
  • GlossGenius describes Standard as for businesses just starting out and Gold as for businesses up to 9 staff.
  • GlossGenius lists no extra fee for Tap to Pay, card on file or manual entry.

  • Square Plus: $49 per month, per location

  • In person on Square Free (tap, dip or swipe): 2.6% + 15¢
  • Online on Square Free: 3.3% + 30¢
  • In person on Square Plus: 2.5% + 15¢
  • Online on Square Plus: 2.9% + 30¢
  • Square describes Square Free as for solo professionals and Square Plus as for growing teams.

  • Professional: $59 per month, or $49 a month billed annually, unlimited clients

Card processing

  • Stripe processing, every card payment: 2.9% + $0.30
  • Mila platform fee, on payments through Mila: 0.5%
  • Tips are never charged the platform fee.

Questions worth asking any booking app

  • How do most of your clients pay? Deposits and cards on file are usually charged at the online rate, not the in-person one.
  • What happens to the monthly price when you add a second artist or a second calendar?
  • Is the price you see an introductory rate, and what is it after that?
  • Are there monthly fees on top of the card rate, and are they listed?
  • Can you take your client list and history with you if you ever leave?
